LUCIANA KAPLUN
My work takes the form of collective action and is rooted in social and political engagement.
I use various models and platforms of popular culture as vehicles of collective memory and social identities.
Manipulating these models, I attempt to expose and transform the mechanisms at work in the creation of collective experience. However, it is important to me that I don't simply replicate the original model, but rather breathe new life into it by relating it to lived experiences and real-time processes providing the framework for a new and unexpected form of social interaction.
My work involves a range of media and artistic practices such as photography, video and performance. It always contains a strong performative element; live action and re-enactment are central tools in my work. I seek to challenge the accepted framework of how and where art occurs, and ask questions about the institutional context of the art world.
Questions of ideology and collective identity play a central role in my personal life. Growing up in Argentina, I was an enthusiastic member of the Zionist youth movement and made “Aliya” at the age of 20. My experience of Israeli society since that time, and the experience of finding my place in it as an immigrant, awakened in me a more critical outlook of the ideology on which I was raised. This has led me to explore the mechanisms and power-structures that enable the creation of such forms of belief and conviction.
